China approves lithium-hydroxide futures and options on Guangzhou exchange

CSRC registered lithium-hydroxide futures and options on GFEX on 6 November. No listing date yet; the October draft pointed to code LI and a 1-tonne lot.

China’s securities regulator (CSRC) said on 6 November 2026 that it had agreed to register lithium-hydroxide futures and options on the Guangzhou Futures Exchange (GFEX). Xinhua Finance (China Financial Information Network), First Finance (Yicai) and Jiemian News (via Eastmoney) carried the same short text: CSRC will urge GFEX to complete preparations for a stable launch. A Sina Finance 7×24 flash at 17:06 Beijing time attributed the note to CSRC itself.

The 6 November statement does not give a listing date or republish the full contract text. On 8 October 2026, GFEX opened a public consultation (Notice〔2026〕58) on draft futures and options contracts and business rules, with comments due by 13 October. Contemporary reports (21st Century Business Herald and notice mirrors) described the draft as: trading code LI; 1 tonne per lot; minimum tick 20 yuan per tonne; daily limit 5% versus the prior settlement; minimum margin 7% of contract value; physical delivery; and a delivery-quality basis on national standard GB/T 26008-2020 for battery-grade lithium hydroxide monohydrate, with no substitute delivery grade. The draft option used the hydroxide futures as underlying, one lot (1 t) per contract and American-style exercise. Those parameters are from the October draft; the November registration package alone does not confirm that all of them will survive into listing.

Lithium hydroxide is a lithium salt used mainly to make ternary cathode materials for EV batteries. GFEX already lists lithium-carbonate futures (and options); the new registration creates the regulatory basis for a second lithium-salt contract on the same exchange. Buyers and traders who already use carbonate as a reference will, once listing lands, have an instrument aligned with the hydroxide flow — relevant for anyone specifying NCM/NCA or buying hydroxide on long-term contracts.

CSP analysis: treat the 6 November notice as registration approval, not as the open of trading. Do not invent a launch date, initial volume or foreign-investor rules for LI — none of that came in this package. For sourcing, the practical step now is to map whether your hydroxide or ternary-cell contracts cite only spot/SMM prices or also an exchange index, and to prepare hedge language for when GFEX publishes the listing circular.
